The Marriage Family

My kinsman Howard Knight is researching the Marriage family history, and is ever discovering new branches. The branch that we are on has been documented with a large family tree, originally constructed in the 1920s and kept up to date since. It starts with Francis and Mary Marriage, whose ten children were born over the period 1657 - 1674. We are 8 generations after them.

Howard would like to hear from you if you have any Marriage family connections:

Is your name Marriage? Or was one of your ancestors a Marriage? Would you like to know more about your Marriage family?

If so, just email me to tell me what you already know and I will see what I can add - I aim to provide a clearing-house. I have information about over 20 families, nearly all originating in Essex, the earliest going back as far as 1650. Current members are to be found in Canada, USA, Australia and New Zealand as well as Britain. Some were Quakers, some perhaps Huguenots.

According to the Oxford Dictionary of English Surnames the name Marriage is derived from a lost place in Essex and from a word meaning boundary gate and from a boundary- or meadow-ridge. It seems that some forms of the name go back to the 13th century.
